FIRESMART PROGRAM

What is FireSmart?

FireSmart empowers communities to proactively undertake actions that increase their wildfire resilience and reduce the impacts of wildfire.

FireSmart is informed by a growing foundation of evidence-based scientific research that aims to reduce losses from wildfire events.

The Home Ignition Zone

On residential properties the critical area around a home or structure is called the Home Ignition Zone, or HIZ. This zone is where targeted mitigation can have the greatest impact and reduce losses that result from a wildfire.

The HIZ is broken down into three subzones; the Immediate Zone which extends 1.5m from a structure and includes the structure itself; the Intermediate Zone which extends from 1.5-10m from a structure; and the Extended Zone which extends from 10 to 30m from a structure.

It is important to recognize that the HIZ of one structure can overlap the HIZ of other structures regardless of property boundaries.

THE LOCAL FIRESMART PROGRAM

The Local FireSmart program is funded through the Community Resiliency Investment Program.

Local FireSmart program initiatives are directed by a Community FireSmart & Resiliency Committee. Once completed, this Committee will assist the local FireSmart Coordinator to Implement the Village's community Wildfire Resiliency Plan.

Program Initiatives for 2024 Include:

- FireSmart Events and Workshops
- FireSmart Home Assessments

FIRESMART HOME ASSESSMENTS

A great way to engage with the Local Fire Smart Program is to have the FireSmart Coordinator complete a FireSmart Home Assessment. They are also the first step to access local FireSmart Rebate Programs where they are available.
